One of the keys to successfully passing or attacking from the half guard is the under hook. On a fundamental level, whoever controls the under hook in half guard has the advantage.
If the Jiu Jitsu player on the bottom has the under hook, they’ll be able to get underneath their opponent and sweep or submit. If the player on top has the under hook, then they can flatten out their opponent and pass.
So what can you do when you’re trying to pass, and your opponent gets the under hook or gets deep underneath you?
Well, you have a couple of options such as re-pummeling and switching sides, but I want to share with you a technique that has been working very well for me lately.
It’s a variation of the back step, but unlike the regular back step, it doesn’t require you drag your opponent with you, PLUS it leave’s you in a really strong Knee Slide position.
I’m calling it the Weave Half Guard Pass, and you can check it out below.
This video is part of a new feature in the ‘Rolling With Tom‘ membership group called ‘What’s Working Now’.
The idea is, whenever I develop a new technique, concept, or strategy, or have something that’s working like gangbusters, I share it with the group so all the members can benefit from it.
