There are several advantages to getting underneath your opponent in guard. Firstly, it becomes very difficult for your opponent to put their weight down on you, and secondly, it becomes easier to sweep your opponent as you’re directly under their centre of gravity.
In episode 41 of 2 Minute Jiu Jitsu, you’ll learn how to get underneath your opponent by transitioning from De La Riva to Single Leg X and the 1970’s sweep from there.
The great thing about this transition is your foot stays on your opponents hip, so don’t lose distance control. This makes it much harder for your opponent to pass during the transition.
