I want to share with the most important concept I learned from the Mendes Brothers… and it’s probably the biggest mistake I see people make when playing guard.
It’s the concept of distance control.
To be effective while playing guard you have to control the distance and create barriers your opponent has to remove. If you don’t control the distance, your opponent will find it far easier to pass your guard.
To illustrate this concept, check out this short video taken from a seminar I taugh recently in Ireland.
Want to see the concept in action? Check out this match breakdown between Rafa Mendes and Rodolfo Vieira. Rafa does a masterful job of controlling the distance and neutralising Rodolfo’s size.
